Road to Recovery (Plymouth cult group): spreading the 'disease'

We quote:

Hello

I'm an NA member in the Devon Fellowship.

I just read your article about NA and DAA in Plymouth and thought you might value an update.

As your article accurately states, up until about 9 years ago 'Roads to Recovery' AA was trying to infiltrate NA with the same agenda and tactics of aggressive recruitment and controlling sponsorship they still use in AA.

They set up NA groups titled 'Into Action' (chapter from AA's Big Book), and no one was allowed to sponsor using NA literature, and everyone had to be part of the same sponsorship chain that was rooted in Roads to Recovery in Plymouth.

As you might imagine, this caused huge disunity in NA in what I assume is a similar way to what AA is still experiencing, and also caused a lot of harm to the reputation of NA in all the services that engage it.

Fortunately, In 2009, these groups finally accepted that the Devon NA fellowship was never going to accept their processes, and they shut down their 'rogue meetings', and immediately reopened them as 'DAA' meetings.

They continued to be being sponsored in chains rooted in the Roads to Recovery AA group, and continued to aggressively recruit sponsees. NA members never attend their meetings so they have enjoyed unity in their own culture, though strangely, with regular splits where groups form factions.

Over the last few years, NA in Devon has been free from these people and has grown much stronger. Its meetings have trebled in size and healthy, gentle, non-controlling sponsorship chains have flourished.

Devon NA's service structure has become very strong and enjoys a peaceful and loving group conscience, strongly committed to NA's spiritual principles, and a unity in service that seemed impossible a few years ago.

The DAA meetings split into two factions, and more recently some of their members have left and started a CA group.

NA has recently had some DAA members again seeking to promote their fellowship by recruiting newcomers from NA, but NA quickly put a stop to this. NA has written clarity statements and developed practices that make very clear that whilst NA respects that there are many pathways to recovery, its meetings exist only for those people wishing to recover through its processes.

My personal favourite intervention is to ask the occasional DAA member I see two simple questions:

1. Are you here to receive the Narcotics Anonymous message of recovery for application in your own recovery process?
2. Are you here to share the experience, strength and hope you've gained through NA meetings, NA sponsorship, and NA literature?

This makes no judgment of them and honours the 3rd Tradition, but also leaves them having to make a choice about facing their own motives and communicating honesty.

It's never failed yet. They either leave immediately or don't return.

Just to be 100% clear; If any one of these people wanted my help, I would very willingly be there for them. My experience is that they never attend seeking help for themselves. They only attend seeking recruits.

Local drug services are now pretty much up to speed on these dynamics. I'm not so sure about probation etc.

I speculate that there are some very distorted religious beliefs behind these people's 'fundamentalist' behaviour that actually stem from the same religion I am part of, just, from my perspective, from a completely deluded misinterpretation of what the text of this religion names.

What ever my religious beliefs, I trust in NA's group conscience and am coming up to 19 years complete abstinence clean time thanks to NA's literature and culture of recovery, and am still very grateful for this.

I have written this post to be of service to the AA fellowship. In NA we call it 'The Mother Fellowship'. NA is not affiliated with AA and has developed its own distinct recovery message and culture, but it is also hugely grateful for what AA created and allowed it to benefit from. In rural areas many NA members seek sponsorship from AA, and attend both fellowships to maintain enough meeting attendance to support their recoveries.”

Comment: The description above mirrors fairly accurately what is happening in AA in those parts of the country contaminated by the Road to Recovery 'strong sponsorship' ethos (ie. bullying). The fellowship has factionalised splitting between what we would term real AA and its sick counterpart – the cult. It's a pity that AA seems less able to deal with this phenomenon than its sister fellowship. Maybe there are lessons to be learnt here. But on past performance it seems unlikely that any effective action will be taken and this process will continue accelerating the already established decline of AA until yet another 'temperance' group is consigned to the dustbin of history. For a fellowship that places such emphasis on the value of experience we seem to be quite unwilling to learn from either our past or our mistakes! The Traditions exist neither by accident nor as a mere afterthought. They are crucial for our survival. The cult may be entirely ready to pervert their meaning but we simply cannot afford that luxury.

Cheers

Re: Surrey St Sunday meeting (Croydon)

From our correspondent:

"Dear AA cultwatch,......

Two months ago some male members from the group began expressing concerns that during Sunday fellowship a group claiming to be 'Back to Basics' where using very assertive canvassing and recruitment techniques to get
men on their program.

...... this group discuss, for example, that there is no need for a sponsor as it is not in the Big Book. All this of course occurred outside of an AA setting. Nevertheless I relayed my concerns, and those of the other men, to the all (apart from me) female committee.

In the last week, things have progressed to the point that Back to Basics are now using the same room that AA have their meetings in to host post meeting group sessions. My phone calls to GSO confirm that Back to Basics is not endorsed by AA. B2B has crossed the line and is becoming increasingly clear that men are no longer returning to Surrey st meetings as they feel B2B is not 'in the spirit of AA'.

B2B are subtle with their approach and never mention B2B when they share at either meeting. Please spread the word regarding Back to Basics and what is happening with AA in Croydon....." (edits to preserve anonymity)

Comment: Back to Basics has essentially been set up as Wally P's pension pot. It's a programme rip off that makes all sorts of claims to success rates (as yet unsubstantiated). It forms part of the Big Book recovery 'industry' where 'experts' of all shapes and sizes peddle their wares in the hope of making a few bucks (and massaging their already frail egos) on the side. But if you don't fancy the text based (overnight success 'guaranteed') approach then you can always opt to join the sponsor 'fetishists' (Road to Recovery, Joys of Recovery, Clancy I blah blah blah) club. Here you can happily dispense with the need to seek out a Higher Power .. one will be provided for you ... in the shape of yet another 'wise guy' (or gal .. let's not be sexist here!) who will happily organise your life for you .. No need to think for yourself or ask for God's guidance (if you're inclined that way). Just ring up your sponsor and they'll tell you ALL you need to know and do ... Or ...... you could just go along to a bog standard AA meeting, sit down, drink your beverage, munch on a biccie and listen to other people as they share their experience of getting and staying sober in the REAL world You might even chip in with a few thoughts yourself. And then you just go out and DO it! And guess what! That works as well! Who'd have thought it! It couldn't be that simple could it? Yep. It's just that simple....

Update on Plymouth (cult) Intergroup

Our contributor writes:

IT'S ROTTEN!!!!

If this were an episode of Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares, the above phrase would be ringing in your ears - and there is no more appropriate phrase to describe- what is left - of Plymouth Intergroup.

Where do we begin?

Facts and figures -
85% of all positions remain vacant, 10% of those in position are 'Caretaking' the role until someone takes over (12th of Never, should you ask) which leaves 5% elected and in position Treasurer and Where To Find (absent from more meetings than he has attended).

The R-T-R contingent have all stepped out of their positions, and have done this early - having achieved nothing in their time in position. And their excuses boarder on hilarious - I've got a baby now (hmmm.....this is an hour and a half meeting once every two months, not a full time 40hr per week position) - I thought I needed to rotate out at this time - oh well, I've missed the last meeting so I'll just step down now - are amongst the best and most recent.

R-T-R love love love taking up service positions at Intergroup, and drop them before they are due to rotate out - it's a form of control, I'm sure.

The number of GSR's represented at Intergroup coup now be counted on one hand, and would still give you fingers left over. It has become an established fact that Plymouth Intergroup is a waste of time.

Now, shall we look at who's left?
The Treasurer - the ultimate control freak. The most recent meeting was moved to accommodate her being there. Heaven forbid that she may not be able to attend, hence we were given days of notice that the meeting was moved, and this lead to an all time low attendance.

Now, GSO have told groups that they may keep a reserve of money to use for local work, PI etc - this was discussed some 6 months ago, and Plymouth Intergroup decided to hold back a portion of money to use. You will see how this links in to the start of this letter, as there is no one in position to do any additional work! So Plymouth, the Intergroup that haemorrhaged money whilst the previous Treasurer, a R-T-R member, gambled the lot away! So an Intergroup that cannot be trusted to manage its finances is allowed to keep a higher surplus and not send it to GSO!!!
It beggars belief!

Plymouth Intergroup is, unfortunately, a non-functioning body.
Nobody is allowed to join and everybody leaves...it provides a platform for AA members to be seen to be doing 'service' - service being sitting down in a room for barely 90 minutes, 30 of those spent trying to avoid the halitosis of the R-T-R GSR, who ALWAYS has to find a point from the previous meetings minutes, no matter how small, to go over - several times. Given the choice I feel that he would pull apart the grammar, spelling, syntax and type font used - as long as it showed that he was doing service.

So we concluded our update - a rotten non-functioning Intergroup, that does nothing to spread the message, nothing to enable members to take part and nothing to send the correct sums of money to GSO (you never know, someone, one day, might, just might use some money to spread the message - but then again. No.) But we will see what happens at the next meeting, once the Treasurer has decided a date convenient for herself.

As always -

Plymouth Road to Recovery cult group host multi-fellowship Big Book event

It seems that Wayne P and his cohorts, no longer content merely with 13 stepping and generally 'grooming' (ie. abusing) newcomers (even getting them pregnant from time to time!), ripping off AA and perverting its principles, have decided to go into the Big Book business. Apparently the locals are invited to join other fellowships (what happened to the Traditions? Oh yeah We forgot....they wouldn't apply in a cult group would they!) at the above venue (slightly edited .. we don't want to encourage them) where they will be subjected to the 'expertise' of various imported (and no doubt carefully vetted) 'authorities' (but see Dr Bob, The Fundamentals – In Retrospect, AA Grapevine, 1948 esp. “no special interpretations” para. 3) . Along the way they will be startled to learn that the AA message has now become so distorted (or diluted – take your pick) that hardly anyone gets sober any more.... and even if by some extraordinary accident of fate (eg. attending AA meetings) they do it will be the 'wrong' kind of sobriety.... blah di blah di blah – you get our gist we think!

Cheers

PPS If you want our opinion (yeah yeah .. we know all about opinions) … or even a suggestion perhaps …you might more profitably employ your time finding yourself a piece of newly painted wall and watching it dry! We assure you that this will be incomparably more interesting (and sobering) than attending the above farce!!

Plymouth Road to Recovery (cult) group - claiming the moral high ground?

Usually the juxtaposition of these two phrases would send us into paroxysms of near hysterical laughter. The association of Plymouth Road to Recovery with even the most vestigial moral code is too ridiculous even to contemplate. But following our entries of 16th and 20th March we've received a slew of comments and emails (generally abusive) from members (clearly) of the aforementioned group who seem to want to claim that very position. They all follow a common pattern: how wonderful the R2R are ….. and how awful, sick, twisted blah di blah we are.. How can we sleep at night? We must be child molesters etc etc … we think you get the general idea ….. But the problem is that we're NOT the ones screwing (and impregnating) newcomers .... moreover we're NOT the ones ripping off literally thousands of pounds from the local intergroup … finally we're NOT the ones systematically bullying and abusing newcomers under the guise of so-called 'tough love' sponsorship. Nope .. not at all. In fact we ARE the ones who advocate the guidelines and principles of AA, and who regularly point out that there's absolutely NO mention in any of these of AA members being authorised to direct or control others, bully them, con them, let alone screw them or rip them off.

Thus should any of our regular cult audience feel the need to direct their moral outrage in our direction you may as well save yourselves the time... We're not going to put any of your comments on our blog (why should we bore AA members with your mad rants??). Your emails are simply consigned to our trusty bin (water of a duck's back!)... In fact the more you bluster the more evident becomes your own moral bankruptcy.

It must be very frustrating for those who are so used to controlling others being absolutely UNABLE to do anything to stop us. How does it feel? Not good we'd guess from your response.... something to think about maybe!! But unlikely given the bigoted mind set of the average cult member ...

Cheers

'13 Stepping' at the Plymouth Road to Recovery (cult) group (update)

We've received information that suggests the young woman referred to in our last entry had retracted her original (reported) accusations (although a number of sources have already suggested to us that pressure may have been placed upon her to do so). Unfortunately we'll probably never know the truth of the matter because Debbie – that was her name – was found dead on Friday night. She was due to go into a treatment centre tomorrow.

Not so much the Road to Recovery for Debbie... more the Road to Ruin …

'13 Stepping' at the Plymouth Road to Recovery (cult) group

A recently received allegation.

We quote:

Poor …..., a young vulnerable girl who had the misfortune to cross the threshold of the so-called Road to Recovery meeting in Plymouth.

Whilst early in recovery she was summoned to the home of …....... who wished to discuss AA service with her. …....'s idea of service is vastly different to that of sincere AA members.

Sexual advances were made by …..... to …......, who to her credit declined ….....'s offer.

Shortly after this incident …...... sent …...... an on-line photograph of his dick.

One of ….......'s clones (…..... …...) soon made his move on …....... and poor ….... became another R2R mum.

Following the birth …..... struggled to come to terms with her situation and picked up the first drink again. The first drink lead to the second, etc, etc. Then she found herself shoplifting and that resulted in her being arrested.

She was banned from RTR and is now under the care of the local health care unit.

Poor …......., used, abused and dumped by Plymouth R2R.”

(edits to preserve anonymity .... for now!)

These events are all reported to have taken place within the last year.

This is not the first time we've been advised of sexual predation (and other abuses) at the R2R cult group. As our correspondent notes this kind of conduct is not exclusive to this group but the degree and extent of the abuse is almost without parallel (but see the Midtown groups, Washington DC).

Any further information from members in the area would be appreciated before we proceed to the next stage (see here for our new 'public relations' policy)

Cheers (although there isn't much to cheer about here!)

How NOT to run an intergroup....

. if in fact it can be called an intergroup …...

But which intergroup you say? Plymouth (Road to Recovery cult) Intergroup of course!  A 'master class' in corruption and incompetence .....

Our correspondent writes:

"Sunday 13th December.

An harmonious joke.

The typical Roads To Recovery agenda, moaning that their report hadn't been read out by region [South West] the previous weekend, and complete denial that their group is at fault.

A little known fact that in light of the theft, region are considering suspending Plymouth Intergroup. And part of the consideration depends upon a monetary donation to region. A year or so ago, as R-T-R weren't getting their own way they decided to by-pass region and send money straight to GSO as retaliation. Of course, what was given to Intergroup Mike M, who works for the …............, was gambled away! So region have turned tables on R-T-R, basically - you want to cover it up, then we'll see!
Roads had to go thru the motions of an in depth study of Tradition 3, which I'm sure was a great use of time for all who attended.

As is also a tradition of Plymouth Intergroup, the recent "Where to find" listings are wrong. The outgoing Share and Where to find, an incompetent, semi literate Roads member - Martin S - immediately blamed the printer. Of course, that's what printers do - they take the information given, change the lay out, alter the details and spelling, then print and deliver it! Well, apparently, that's what this printer does - it could possibly be Martin's fault.
It was discussed that in the 3 years of taking on this role, that there have been continuous errors, and that as Martin S is now rotating out, maybe a new printer could be found.
Martin S assured us that anyone else is "quadruple the price".
You get what you pay for.

You get what you vote in too.

Talking of which, there are many service vacancies at Plymouth Intergroup, one of which is the Vice Chair position. A non-R-T-R member had been put forward by their home group and attended the Sunday meeting. There was much discussion …...., as usual R-T-R voiced their objections, but the shocking point was the concerns raised by the Treasurer - a member of the same home group as the Vice Chair nominee, she seemed delighted to vote against the nomination. And, as the nominee was out of the room during the discussion and voting - it was with a certain distaste that the Treasurer elected herself (not allowing the Chair) to inform the nominee of the decision not to elect them.
What followed was an onslaught of castigation by R-T-R - offering advice to the nominee, then trying to vote them into an entirely different service position. The nominee declined any further service position with exceptionally good manners and grace, yet R-T-R continued to push and chip-away - until a GSR from another non-R-T-R group objected to the R-T-R members behaviour.

It also came to light that this years Plymouth Convention made a loss.
Can you guess which group the Convention Convener comes from?
Yes, it's Roads To Recovery! Setting the convention fund on a road to bankruptcy.
A third of the usual turn-out was reported back. It was previously just below the 300 mark, this year - 97 people attended.
A great deal of money was spent on raffle prizes, £150 and it made a £30 profit.
It had previously been decided when the last Convenor, a non-R-T-R member, held the post that Intergroup funds were NOT used for buying raffle prizes, and that the convention prizes would be made from donations by members.
However, times change.
R-T-R hypocrisy doesn't.
And, now that it's predominantly a Roads To Recovery convention, and they don't like any old crap - the purchase of prizes from Intergroup funds is allowed!
It was also discussed that a committee was formed, poised and ready for action should another (loss making?) convention be approved. I've heard of closing the stable door after the horse has bolted, but I've never encountered a situation of bricking up the stable to keep the horse in the barn - until today!

All in all, another, predictable, Roads dominated, back-stabbing, loss making Intergroup meeting. Roll on February 14th, when we get to do it all again!

As always

“London Calling”: AA (?) (or Rent-a-Gob) contd

Continuing with our “London Calling” saga you will observe from the following links the striking similarities between the London Calling “Gathering” promotional website and another AA (?) set-up (Gallup) located in New Mexico (with some of the same speakers appearing). These events serve primarily a 'missionary' function imparting what is claimed to be an esoteric knowledge which is the preserve (or so it seems) of only the chosen few. The rest of us unfortunates - blind as we are to the 'one true message' (or so it is implied) - are deemed to need this 'elect' to communicate their special insights into the programme in order that we heathens might benefit from their unique knowledge blah di blah di blah ….. Of course no such event would be complete without the presence of the UK's foremost 'rent-a-gob', no less a personage than Plymouth Road to Recovery (cult) group's Wayne P. Wayne, despite suffering from a chronic condition know as 'keg displacement' or 'falling down trouser' syndrome, bravely made his way from the south west to Wimbledon to impart his own incomparable vision of recovery. For those of you who have not come across this cult group's self-appointed guru before (and let's face it - you can number only a few!), and were unfortunate enough to miss this groundbreaking event, fear not! With only a couple of clicks you too can witness the pearls of wisdom as they slide oleaginously from Wayne's lips! It's rather unfortunate perhaps that their lustre has faded somewhat with the passage of time. As far as we can tell Wayne's progress along the Road of Happy Destiny seems to have got stuck somewhat in a 'retrogressive groove' – or to put it another way – he's coming out with the same old 'pony' (Cockney rhyming slang – pony and trap rhymes with ….!) as he was in the mid-eighties. His 'message' (if you can call it that) consists solely of 'get a sponsor' and 'do what your sponsor says' - that's it! No more! We're at a loss somewhat as to why precisely he was asked to 'do a turn' at the Wimbledon International Gathering. After all it was promoted as a Big Book event, and what Wayne knows about the Big Book can easily be put on the back of a postage stamp with room to spare. Still ours not to reason why! Who can doubt the veracity of such a sage's utterances, and especially with his pedigree – or rather that of his sponsors. Firstly there was David B, a man who displayed such stunning hypocrisy as to almost defy belief, who would ceaselessly exhort anyone who wasn't able to get away in time to 'get a sponsor' and 'do what your sponsor says' but somehow managed to do without one himself – and then lied about it! And then there was Clancy – but the less said about him the better! But it would seem neither of these have been able to help Wayne with his dreadful affliction, the aforementioned keg displacement. Still we live in hope! The age of miracles is not dead! In the meantime we're quite sure that Wayne's latest 'squeeze' (a newcomer) will console him after the departure of his previous partner (impregnated but now redundant), not forgetting, of course, his ex-wife. We know that we have in the past advised Wayne to 'go forth and multiply' but not for one moment did we think he'd take it literally!

Cheers

Update to Plymouth (cult) intergroup alleged fraud

Our correspondent writes:

Where is the £14,000 that …. [the ex-Intergroup treasurer] [allegedly] stole from the Plymouth Intergroup bank account?

No one has produced a document showing that the money has been returned.

The new treasurer (a member of the Lee Mill Group) has adopted the attitude that "the stolen money issue should be dropped and everyone should move on". Lee Mill are, of course, fans of R2R.

No bank statement has been seen to confirm that the £14,000 is in the bank account and no receipt from GSO has been seen to confirm that the money was sent to them.

........ informed Plymouth Intergroup that he had borrowed the money from ….. to make the repayment. If he was truthful and told ….... why he needed the money then one would assume that the money would have been paid into the Intergroup account via bank transfer from ….. account or that …... would have written a cheque made payable to Plymouth Intergroup. In the event of the payment being made in either of these ways then it should be seen as an outside contribution and declined/returned.

If ….... was not truthful with ….... and told ….. that he needed the money for some other reason then one could assume that payment would go direct to him. In the event of this happening he would have had another £14,000 sitting in his own bank account!!!!

There has been some reshuffling of the pack at Plymouth Intergroup but the same players have their grubby little hands on the table with R2R still in control and Dave M (former chair) clinging onto his prison domain with his hand out stretched for his expenses.....

How amazingly witty! But of course this does beg the question … how did the boat get holed in the first place? Perhaps Wayne finally managed to retrieve his foot from its usual position (in his mouth) only to place it directly through the hull? We will probably never know.

And then we come to the cult group's motto:
